Position Nuit - The Filthiest b/w The Body Review

Position Nuit (pronounced  nwee)  are a volcanic L.A. five piece band that plays blown out rock n' roll with a dark and surly disposition. This is their debut single, consisting of only two songs yes, but these songs will leave enough of an impact, enough of that salty taste in your mouth, that it'll leave you thrusting for more. The band sounds like they were raised on real rock n' roll as a religion, much like The Cramps, Nick Cave or Jon Spencer treat or treated their craft. There's an old saying: "you have to know the architecture before you start tearing down the walls." Well, the same goes for adding walls and coats of paint. But Position Nuit have a strong enough foundation, that they can do whatever the hell they want and I'd like it.  The first song "The Filthiest" starts out with a killer, rolling thunder drumbeat accompanied by loud, aggressive guitars pushing right up against it, like a freight train right on it's heels. Creating ...

Brad Marino: Entity of Disruption!

Shock Treatment: So Brad, can you tell me who’s all in the Brad Marino Band and what everyone does in the group? Brad Marino: Sure thing, so the “Brad Marino Band” consists of myself along with Bobby Davis on the bass/back up vocals & Craig Sala on the drums/vocals. We’ve sometimes had an additional guitarist but we’re running lean and mean now as a 3 PCS. It keeps things tight and simple. For the upcoming Spain tour, Gene Champagne will be playing the drums. Shock Treatment:  Tell me about this new record you have coming out  Agent of Chaos : Brad Marino: “Agent of Chaos” is my 5th long player. I’m really excited about this one. It’s got 12 tracks all written by me- which surprisingly is a first- in albums past I’ve collaborated with someone on at least 1 or 2 tracks or thrown in a cover to round it out but this one is all songs made up by me. It also has a great mix of songs- all the things that make a Brad Marino record. Punky stuff, Power Pop, Rock n Roll and it’s...

The Mandates Are Here!

The Mandates are a pressure packed Rock n’ Roll powerhouse blasting out of the streets of Calgary. Some of the other press the band has received describes their sound as very “New York” and I couldn’t agree more. The songs drip with Ramones heart and glow with Dead Boys power. The best testament to this lies in the band’s debut full length, which they released in March of 2013. The album will make you want to fight that fancy dressed jerk that keeps hittin’ on your best lady friend. Then steal that same douche bag’s car and drive it really fast right through the front doors of that convenience store that humiliated and kicked you out earlier for trying to buy cigarettes and beer with your fake I.D. Every impulse a great Rock n’ Roll record should bring out of you. This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on January 30th, 2014 Interview by Jay Castro Shock Treatment: Please introduce yourself and how do you contribute to the Mandates Rock n’ Roll machine? My name is Brady ...

Kurt Baker Is Here!

In 2010, Kurt Baker released an EP called Got It Covered where he introduced the world to his greatest influences by covering their music. This didn’t feel like a covers album though. Kurt turned the volume to 11 and cranked out tunes by power pop titans The Nerves, Joe Jackson, The Vapors and many more. He played those songs with such gusto and gumption I had to hear more of his songs. That same energy continues to electrify piece of music he puts out. I often ask the people I interview if there’s a certain song or album they put on to help them get out of a bad mood. For me, Kurt’s LP Brand New Beat has been permanently added to that list. This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on January 8th, 2014 Interview by Jay Castro Shock Treatment: You were born in Portland, Maine, where you still live today. What was it like growing up there? I live in Arizona and Maine is a place I really want to visit before I croak. I imagine rocky shorelines, foggy cold breeze, ...

The Battered Suitcases Interview!

Cool is a word that in my opinion is thrown around far too much and has lost a lot of its meaning. Miles Davis, David Bowie, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen that’s what I think of when I hear the word “cool.” Battered Suitcases exhibit a similar saunter and confidence that is necessary to pull off a complete rock n’ roll package well. The music if power packed with brazen lyrics peppered with references to old Beatnik verse, brazen guitars, and drums that crash and explode like an avalanche falling on your face. While all of this is going on simultaneously, the band still manage to keep that particular “cool. ” This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on December 11th, 2013 Interview by Jay Castro Shock Treatment: Please introduce yourselves and how you contribute to the Battered Suitcases rock n roll machine? Sharon Case – Songwriter, poet, singer, bass, keyboards Jessica Case – Drums, backing vocals Sue T. Case – Rhythm guitar, bass, backing vocals Frank Case – Lead g...

Presenting: The Recordettes!

Brooklyn, New York’s The Recordettes play a unique brand of loud, campy, blown out, fuzzed up bubblegum rock. The music is played with such fun and fury; I can only imagine how amusing seeing them live would be. Their debut 7” just came out earlier this year on the No Front Teeth recording label out of the U.K. This label, in case you are unaware, is usually reserved for acid spewing 77-style punk rock like The Gaggers or Ricky C. Quartet. So the fact that someone at NFT recognizes the inimitable talents of the Recordettes makes their debut record that much more fascinating. Why do those Brits always seem to recognize good American music before America does! This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on December 11th, 2013 Interviewed by Jay Castro Shock Treatment: Please introduce yourselves and how do you contribute to The Recordettes Rock ‘N’ Roll machine? TONY: I am Tony Lofi, amazing singer and guitar player for The Recordettes. Also, a huge liar. ANNA: Anna Anabo...

Scorpion vs Tarantula Interview

This is not your timid 20 something’s on stage staring at their sweat beads on the ground. SVT bunch play earsplitting, express train punk Rock ‘N’ Roll the likes of which The Valley of the Sun has never seen before. A singer that prowls around the stage in Blade Runner Replicant makeup programmed with Bon Scott venom and Joan Jett strut and a guitar player that was in one of the best garage punk bands of the mid 90’s, The Chinese Millionaires. What more can a fanboy ask? Grab on to something load bearing, I hear the air raid sirens, and the house is beginning to rumble. Behold, the Scorpion vs. Tarantula Rock ‘N’ Roll hurricane is about to plug in. This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on October 22nd, 2013 Interview by Jay Castro Shock Treatment: Who’s answering the questions? Jay Bennett, guitar ST: Who is in Scorpion vs. Tarantula and what instrument do they play? JB: L. Hotshot, vocals. Tana Satana, bass, Michael “Cappy” Renfroe, drums. ST:  I noticed y...

An interview with The Rebel Set!

This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on July 11th, 2013 Most bands that I hear from my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona either make me recoil or their music goes totally without notice. I don’t know which is worse. However, every now and again I hear one that makes me want to root for. One that gives me hope that all is not lost in an ocean of second rate metal dinosaurs and uninspired blues copyists. One of those bands is The Rebel Set. They glide at their audience on a wave of reverberation that is wrapped up in classic noir and surf guitar mystique in the midst of a garage punk assault. The band takes the better parts of Rock N Roll from times ago and mixes it up with a dose of their own allure. Sounds easy enough, however you have to know which parts to excavate and which parts to lend your soul to. That’s been the recipe for rock n roll since its conception and the Rebel Set have become master chefs at this delicacy. Interview by Jay Castro Who’s answeri...

The Ricky C Quartet Interview!

This interview originally appeared in Audio Ammunition on July 2nd, 2013 Anyone who thinks good rock n roll is defined by how fast some pompous ass can fondle a fret board or how high some overpaid wanker can vocally hit some hideous high note is sorely mistaken. Good Rock ‘N’ Roll has always been about heart and gusto, in fact any good art is for that matter. Judging by what is passing as rock n roll in the main stream now days, it’s easy to lose optimism. However, any person that thinks this torch has been smothered out long ago isn’t looking in the right places. There are still bands breathing the truth and vigor of the forefathers. Take for example The Ricky C Quartet. They have taken queues from some of the greats and serve it to you lean and mean. They are now in possession of the aforementioned torch, and they’re burning it like a supernova. Interview by Jay Castro Who’s answering the questions here? Ricky C, Joe the Dog and Jimmy Jones Who is in the band and what instrum...
