Position Nuit - The Filthiest b/w The Body Review

Position Nuit (pronounced nwee) are a volcanic L.A. five piece band that plays blown out rock n' roll with a dark and surly disposition. This is their debut single, consisting of only two songs yes, but these songs will leave enough of an impact, enough of that salty taste in your mouth, that it'll leave you thrusting for more. The band sounds like they were raised on real rock n' roll as a religion, much like The Cramps, Nick Cave or Jon Spencer treat or treated their craft. There's an old saying: "you have to know the architecture before you start tearing down the walls." Well, the same goes for adding walls and coats of paint. But Position Nuit have a strong enough foundation, that they can do whatever the hell they want and I'd like it.

The first song "The Filthiest" starts out with a killer, rolling thunder drumbeat accompanied by loud, aggressive guitars pushing right up against it, like a freight train right on it's heels. Creating a sinister, yet restless mood, like you're being chased in a park on a cold, foggy night. You want to stop and rest just for a second, but I think we all know what'll happen if you do. Then the vocals tear in, like growls from a wild animal affected by the moon. The song also features an absolute scorcher of a riff which grabs a hold of your collar with both hands, shaking you around and doesn't let go. The solo in this song has a touch of Poison Ivy to it that fits in just perfectly, and I dig that a lot.

The next tune simply titled "The Body" is slower and more ominous number. Like when you see a storm slowly moving in from the west, but still over the ocean. You can see it in the distance, unleashing it's fury over the sea and you know, if it's coming your way, it's going to be big trouble. Once again, the drums take the lead and kick off the ambience just right. Giving off a similar sensation of when you slowly, cautiously open a door and walk into an old abandoned structure that you know you have absolutely no business going into. The guitars on this song really shine out once again, delivering dagger tipped hooks that remind me of early John McKay/Siouxsie and The Banshees: loud, sharp and haunting.

Don't get me wrong, the entire band all hold up their parts of these tunes here, absolutely no issues there. If they didn't, the whole thing would just crumble in your hands like ancient papyrus. The thing that really makes Position Nuit stand out is it that deep down at their mangled and macabre core, is a raw, stout hearted garage rock band. These songs are held together with blood, sweat and black leather. I can't wait to hear that this band unleashes upon us in the near future.
