An Interview with Nasty Rumours!

Interview conducted with Nasty Rumours lead vocalist Juli

Shock Treatment So the last time I interviewed you guys, it was October of 2015! You guys went from being the scrappy new band to elder statesmen! In those 11 years, how do you feel you guys have become wiser or grown as a band?

Juli: Time flies it is crazy. As a band we definitely matured, maybe not so much as people haha. It's been 11 years of fun playing, recording and being on the road. I think we managed to become a decent live band over the years.

Shock Treatment: Last year, you guys released that killer split 7” with Cyanide Pills. The two songs you guys had on there “My Final Heartbeat” and “Bury Me In My Leather Jacket” are great, some of the best Nasty Rumours tunes to date! Did you guys purposely put two songs about death on the record?

Juli: It's actually a coincidence and no big concept behind it. My shrinks words not mine haha. "My final heartbeat" didn't make it on the last LP and "bury me in my leather jacket" was the only new song in our pockets when we were asked to do the split 7".

Shock Treatment: You guys also toured with Cyanide Pills last year! That must have been a great tour, your two bands seem like they go together very well musically! How did the tour go for you guys? Can you tell me some highlights?

Juli: Yes it was super sick to tour with our mates from Leeds. Musically it made total sense to have that double bill and people enjoyed it a lot. And so did we! Besides being a fantastic band Cyanide Pills are a bunch of super cool blokes and being on tour with them was nothing but fun. Unfortunately their singer Phil was struggling with his voice, therefore at some point I had to step in on vocals for a few songs during the tour. I love their music and to sing their songs and helping them out was definitely a highlight for me. Probably not so much for them haha!

Shock Treatment: So speaking of shows, I was reading about how Keith Richards has to have a shepard's pie before every show since 1989! Over the years, have you guys developed any pre-show rituals of your own? And if not, what are some that you’d like to have?

Juli: Our guitar player usually drinks a bucket of Bourbon and we all gather around him and observe his funny drunkenness. I think we actually never had shepherds pie before a show like Keith Richards. But we also never did heroin before a show like Keith Richards. Maybe we better just stick to our routine.

Shock Treatment: A few years ago, you did some videos for a couple of songs off your latest LP Bloody Hell, What A Pity. Do you guys have fun making them? Tell me a bit about the video for the song “You’ve Got My Number”

Juli: I'm not the biggest fan of making videos to be honest haha. It's a thin line between just acting and acting like a total poser. And we're even worse actors than musicians haha. Watching those videos is as weird to me as listening to our music. The "You've got my number" video was shot in the bathroom of Reitschule/Rössli Bar. Reitschule is an autonomous cultural center that has been around since the 80s. It used to be an abandoned building with horse stables in it, it was back then squatted by the youth. There's now a restaurant, various venues, a cinema. Still the epicentre of culture here in Bern, a very left wing and revolutionairy place. We owe this place and its people a lot.

Shock Treatment I really like it when bands make videos. As a fan, you get to experience a band a bit more in a totally different way. Did you guys have any music videos that influenced you or that you liked watching over and over when you were kids?

Juli: My band mates could probably tell you about tons of video clips from back in the day. Bless those old farts. I missed out on it being younger then them, I haven't really been watching clips, mtv and stuff. But I do remember those THE BRIEFS videos when I was a teenager, watching them a million times.

Shock Treatment: So when I hear your music, I immediately hear bands like The Undertones, or Generation X, etc. But what are some bands that have been a big influence on you guys that people might be surprised to know?

Juli: Somebody once said we sound like the Beatles on speed which made me laugh. I guess we are all influenced by all kinds of stuff besides the obvious 70s punk bands. For example old school folk and country music for me. Hank Williams, Sanford Clark The sound is simple, the topics of the lyrics are sometimes tough, sometimes just love songs, stories with a twist...very punk if you asked me. I've got a Woody Guthrie tattoo.

Shock Treatment: The band is still based in Bern, Switzerland. Are there any new Swiss punk bands out there that you like playing with and you think more people should know about?

Juli: My mates from BLASKAPELLE CHANCENTOD just released a tape on VOODOO RHYTHM RECORDS and it's great. They are also a fantastic live band. They manage to be a punk band with a synthesizer without sounding like those millions of shitty egg punk bands out there. Check 'em out!

Shock Treatment: What does the rest of 2026 look like for Nasty Rumours?

Juli: We play a few festivals in Germany during the summer. We'll probably write new songs during Fall/Winter. We might try and get high on shepherds pie.

Shock Treatment: Where can people go to listen to your music and buy your records?

Juli: Besides the shitty streaming apps you can order our music on our Bandcamp or via WANDA RECORDS.
